Your first sight of this distinctly turreted red brick Jacobean mansion with its cherished yew hedges either side of the expansive driveway, is one you probably never forget.
With its beautiful gardens, serene lake and 4,700 acre parkland, Blickling Hall is the jewel in the National Trust crown in Norfolk. Its family history is indeed varied with tales of Kings’ mistresses, political intrigue and social ambition.
For four centuries the estate has been at the heart of this North Norfolk community from the Boleyn family to the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, and today you can discover the spirit of Blickling and walk in the footsteps of Lords & Ladies, of cooks, butlers, footmen and scullery maids, all of whom have left their mark.
When you enter the property through The Great Hall there is an immediate sense of grandeur and history. And that is continued throughout the extraordinary rooms that are to be discovered, with too many to mention here. The Long Gallery is perhaps the most remarkable room at Blickling, converted in the 1740’s by owner Sir John Hobart, 1st Earl of Buckinghamshire, into an impressive library after being bequeathed a vast book collection, the most prestigious collection held by the National Trust.
The formal gardens cover 55 acres and is an achievement of three centuries of landscaping and inspired planting.
Visitors can take a stroll on the Acre and enjoy spectacular views across the lake, whilst observing an abundance of wildlife. The lime trees and the turkey oak are particular highlights, with twisting branches and unique character. There are two secret tunnels in the garden, which are a particular favourite for families to explore and enjoy a game of hide and seek.
For four centuries, Blickling’s walled garden supplied enough produce to feed the many families who lived and worked on the estate. However despite falling into disrepair during the twentieth century, a five year project began in November 2014 to restore the walled garden to its former glory.
With fruit, vegetables and herbs growing in abundance, visitors can not only explore the walled garden in full splendour, but also enjoy eating much of its produce in their cafés. The National Trust will be celebrating Christmas 2022 throughout the estate to help kick-start your festive season. You can spend the day exploring the house dressed for a fantastical 1930s Christmas party, or book tickets to enjoy an evening soaking up the atmosphere in their magical garden of lights.
