Built around 1817, the property originally functioned as the old Tollhouse for the River Wensum bridge crossing, prior to the public crossing at Costessey Mill being built.


After firstly being broken by a traction engine carrying paper from the mill at Taverham in the late 19th century and later by a fire engine crossing responding to a fire at Costessey Mill in 1924, the bridge finally met its demise in 1927, when it collapsed – earning the nickname ‘Broken Bridges’.
