Since the last recession, there has been a notable surge in the success of small businesses operating out of former police boxes. These Tardis-like structures, dating back to 1933 when 142 were dotted around Edinburgh, lost their significance in the 1960s and '70s with the introduction of portable radio systems and mobile phones. By the '90s, these structures became useless but were protected by building preservation laws, serving only as photo opportunities for Doctor Who fans.

Designed by City Architect Ebenezer MacRae, only 75 of these iconic police boxes remain standing throughout Edinburgh. Originally equipped with just a sink, a chair, and a kettle, these structures have found new life as creative entrepreneurs in Edinburgh have repurposed them into quirky business spaces.

From an ice cream parlor at Grassmarket to an art haven recognized as 'the smallest gallery in Scotland' on the edge of Meadows Park, these repurposed police boxes showcase the city's entrepreneurial spirit. Given the rarity of affordable commercial properties in the city centre, businesses are seeking alternative cheaper premises. The cost of a year's rent for a typical commercial premises in Edinburgh, including rates, could cover the purchase and setup of a police box…
