Lordship Title

The Lordship of Rangeworthy is five miles south east of Thornbury and eleven miles north east of Bristol, in the Thornbury Hundred of Gloucestershire. The area of the lordship is about 800 acres. In the reign of King Edward II, Hugh de Audley was lord of the manor. He had married Piers Gaveston's widow after he was executed on the orders of the Earl of Lancaster. Gaveston had become too powerful as King Edward's favourite. In spite of having been banished twice, the King had invited him back and declared the banishment illegal. Margaret his widow, who became Hugh de Audley's wife was the daughter of the Earl of Gloucester, who was also beheaded. His execution took place after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Hugh de Audley took the title of his wife's father after the execution and resided at Rangeworthy. From Hugh de Audley, the estate came to John Talbot, Viscount de Lisle and was later held by his widow, Joan, in 1368. By 1521, the Lordship had descended to Elizabeth Courtney, Countess of Devon. She had inherited the estate because a member of her family had married the de Lisle heiress, Elizabeth, who was lord of the manor in her own right in 1495. The Courtneys continued to hold the lordship until the title was conveyed to the Hale family who were in possession in 1608. Sir Matthew Hale, who was Chief Justice of England in the reign of King Charles II, was lord of the manor and lived at the principal residence in the village which has been named "The Court" since at least 1330. Several generations of Hales owned the estate. Mr Matthew Hale was lord of the manor and living at The Court Court in 1712. In 1771 the important local family of Phelps acquired the lordship, which was passed early this century to a relative of theirs, Arthur Clifford, in who's family the title remained until 1988 when the title was sold in an auction room to the current seller.
