Own a slice of conservation history in Southwold Harbour

25.08.2023

It's no secret that Southwold is one of Suffolk's most lucrative coastal locations, and in Auction House East Anglia's September auction a Fisherman’s Hut on the Harbour is going under the hammer, with a guide price of just £10,000.

Sitting directly on the estuary, just a stone’s throw from the beach, the sale of Sea Horse Fisherman’s Hut presents a rare opportunity to purchase a storage facility in a highly sort after waterfront location.

Surrounded by marshland, the hut is situated amongst reed beds and picturesque water meadows. The footpath on the north side of the harbour offers views of Southwold’s two church towers, lighthouse and two water towers, while the footpath north of the Harbour Inn enjoys far-reaching views of the Reydon and Tinker’s Marshes.

Enjoying views over the River Blyth, the Fisherman’s hut is in fantastic condition. Recently repainted, its black-stained weatherboard exterior looks brand new. Featuring an eye-catching blue window and a charming seahorse decoration, this hut offers 78 square feet of internal space, providing ample practical storage.

Southwold itself is a charming north Suffolk seaside town, situated on the heritage close. Bounded by the North Sea to the east, the River Blyth and Southwold Harbour to the southwest, as well as Buss Creek to the north, the town itself is almost an island, with just one access road in and out.

Nowadays, Southwold is best known for its nostalgic pier, brightly coloured beach huts and blue flag family-friendly beach, but it was once home to a booming fishing industry, of which Southwold Harbour played a large part.

Located in a conservation area, Southwold Harbour sits at the mouth of the River Blyth, on the North Sea coast. Described by the Countryside Commission as ‘a ramshackle collection of jetties, huts and sheds’ the harbour extends nearly a mile upstream from the river mouth, and is largely used by fishing boats, trawlers and yachts.

Today, the harbour serves as a relic of the fishing industry which once flourished here, positively contributing to the character of the conservation area, and keeping the town’s rich maritime heritage alive. It’s also a popular spot for tourists, situated in an unspoiled and idyllic setting within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Sea Horse Fisherman’s Hut would be well suited to a local resident in need of further storage, a keen fisherman or sailing enthusiast, as well as those with holiday homes in the area looking to make the most of the coastal location.

Property for sale in Southwold is often snapped up quickly, so we don’t expect this Fisherman’s Hut to be on the market for long. If you’re interested to learn more, why not contact Auction House East Anglia on 01473 558 888 to arrange a viewing and get your questions answered.
